Recommended during preconception

Supplemental intake of 400 micrograms of folic acid is recommended for all women at least one month prior to conception. This level should also be continued throughout the first three months of pregnancy to help reduce the risk of neural tube defects.

The beneficial effect is obtained with a supplemental folic acid daily intake of 400 µg for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
